As MassArt seeks to shift from expecting “college-ready students” to becoming a “student-ready college,” prioritizing the needs and experiences of students of color is critical. For this 3-month project, our 6-person team at Agncy partnered with the MassArt Office of Justice, Equity, and Transformation (JET) and two academic departments to redesign the student experience to center students of color.︎︎︎ This was a large, collaborative process. The co-design session activities were designed to be completed in small, affinity-based groups chosen by participants. This allowed students of color (as well as students of other marginalized identities) to connect with each other and speak openly about their experiences. It also accommodated varied session sizes, ranging from 8 to 40 participants. Instead of continuing to brainstorm outward, we wanted participants to get more specific with their thinking. The need was clear: how do we keep engaging kids as they age up? The team at Agncy figured that this program would be best shaped by the experts: teens themselves. The teens reflected on their own experiences first, then used that reflection to shape questions for adult staff and for their peers. The Agncy team set up synthesis questions and tools for the teen team to make sense of what they had learned. After a little synthesis on the Agncy side, we ended up with four concepts that would work together as part of one larger program. from our original work over the course of 7 sessions. Piloting &amp; Implementation After our “prototyping” sessions, the Agncy team built tools to scaffold implementation (flyers, agendas, supply lists, and more). The teen program moved into piloting &amp; implementation in February 2022. In practice, we found that yes, different teens were more interested in different programs — but almost all attendees came to a wide breadth of events. In the pilot, it became clear that no matter what they were doing, teens were really looking for community, and were excited to have different things to do together as a group. Moving forward, the program will lean into teens’ draw towards social spaces to also connect them to healthy adult relationships, different skills and careers, and support for setting and working towards goals. The Mechanics already had the content — project summaries, calls to action, lists of collaborators, and photos picked out by team members who had worked on each project. I wanted to use illustration to “bridge the gap” between the photos shared and the stories the team told about their projects. Following my instinct to “annotate” the pictures, I printed them out and drew directly onto them. https://louwhiting.com/Web-Design Website Design Allie Keast Jewelry sells handmade jewelry with hand-shaped stones and found objects. Their site needed to support e-commerce as well as provide information on lessons, custom commissions, and their busy market schedule.&nbsp; AKJ’s sister business, Twenty 3 Designs, designs custom wedding and engagement jewelry. The Twenty 3 site needed to function as a portfolio and process information hub.&nbsp;I’ve spent a year partnering with Allie and Paige to support their jewelry businesses through visual design. My clients &amp; I went through a few rounds of revisions. We used ChatGPT to assist in basic content generation, which was then edited for accuracy and voice.&nbsp; Allie and Paige had a number of existing visuals for their sites, but much of it was dated or inconsistent. I defaulted to the site builders that my clients were already using — Shopify for Allie Keast Jewelry, and Wix for Twenty 3 Designs. Content was being generated and revised at the same time that the sites were being built. We deviated from some of the wireframes and reorganized a bit of the architecture.
